The Perron Institute conducts basic, applied and clinical research on neurological and neuromuscular disorders with the goal of translating the outputs of this research into better healthcare outcomes. The institute continues to undertake cuttingedge research on stroke, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson s disease, myositis, brain and spinal cord injury, motor neurone disease and muscular dystrophy as well as other neurological disorders. In addition, the Perron Institute operates a number of specialist neurological clinics that form the basis for the Institute s growing clinical research profile. In terms of research translation, the Perron Institute has developed new therapies for the devastating and fatal childhood disorder, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a disease that typically leaves patients wheelchairbound before their teens and leads to premature death before the age of 30. Three drugs developed at the Perron Institute to skip the defective part of the abnormal gene that is the cause of Duchenne muscular dystrophy have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration and are available to patients, the most recent in early 2021. New drugs are under development for over 50 different diseases, including stroke, motor neurone disease, Adult onset Pompe s disease, familial hypercholesterolaemia, retinitis pigmentosa and a number of other genetic disorders. For stroke, recent studies are particularly encouraging suggesting that polyarginine peptides may be neuroprotective in ischaemic stroke and a range of other neurological disorders. A spinoff company, Argenica Therapeutics has been established to commercialise these products. A startup company, SynGenis has also been launched focusing on the manufacture of researchgrade nucleic acids for use in RNA therapeutics, diagnostics and drug delivery applications. Research at the Perron Institute on palliative and endoflife care is increasingly being adopted by service providers worldwide. The Perron Institute has more than doubled its research over recent years enabling it to make a growing contribution to neurological and related research in Western Australia.
