Grass Skirt Project Ltd
Genderbased violence is a serious issue in Papua New Guinea, with two thirds of women experiencing it. This has led to an increase of physical and emotional trauma as well as other forms of discrimination and abuse. Additionally, these acts of violence have had a longterm negative effect on the country s economic growth and development. The Grass Skirt Project works toward reducing the prevalence of genderbased violence by focusing on the root causes and the main perpetrators men and boys. Through creating leaders of change in a safe space for men to learn about behaviours and attitudes that harm women, our organization is making an impact. The power of sport has been used to bring people together, breaking down barriers that exist between men and communities. Gymbox is a sport for development program which is backed by research showing their effectiveness in reducing inequalities while also engaging people through physical activities like going to the gym, playing rugby league, netball and basketball. This program combines sports with education initiatives such as mentorship programs, awareness campaigns, workshops, seminars and leadership all designed to empower individuals to create lasting social change. Benefits: This approach not only reduces the incidence of genderbased violence but creates positive outcomes not just in terms of equality but also economic growth. It eliminates mental health issues caused by domestic violence; creates a more engaged workforce due to increased focus on education; encourages entrepreneurship; leads to greater participation by women in decisionmaking processes; provides alternative sources of income for families where wages are low or nonexistent; encourages responsible fatherhood (which leads to better family relationships); enables access to healthcare services for affected individuals; lowers the cost burdens associated with relief efforts; decreases crime rates linked to genderbased violence; raises public awareness around these issues; reduces stigma associated with victims/survivors of genderbased violence.
